My sales manager walked through the bullpen one morning chanting “selling is a numbers game and in order to win, pick up the phone and dial it again”. I think he did that because he heard crickets that morning instead of the buzz of his sales team prospecting. It was kind of catchy the way he said it “selling is a numbers game and in order to win, pick up the phone and dial it again”. I liked it. I began to say it over and over to myself and realized that elements of it were true.

That sales is a game. It is a contact sport and that more contact is better than less contact. The more you play the game the better you can get at the game. Especially if you are a student of the game and work on your game to become more skilled while playing the game. The beauty of this affirmation is that you can control how many contacts you attempt to make every day and you are 100% responsible for your own skill development. If you play the game well you will generate an abundance of opportunities for yourself. If you are highly skilled you win more than your fair share of those opportunities. You will win the game.

It’s not about the harder you work the luckier you get. Even though sometimes that happens which is great for you! It’s about playing the game, it’s a contact sport, making adjustments, practicing your skills and winning. This attitude doesn’t apply just to making calls you can apply this same mindset to any of your other prospecting strategies.

What to do now. Tomorrow before every call blitz tell yourself that “selling is a numbers game and in order to win, pick up the phone and dial it again.”
